The Illustrative Design course: be ready for the Hackathon!

In a preparatory phase participants were able to carry out online training for the 3 hackathons to be held in Kenya, Benin and South Africa. One of the three courses is Illustrative Design.

The Illustrative Design course aims to lay the foundations on the visual part of communication, from the creation of a logo to the layout of a document, as well as providing basic knowledge of the “technical” part of graphics and visual communication.

Specifically, the course covers the following topics:

  • What is Graphics? (a brief outline of what is and what is not part of this science)
  • Colour theory: (RGB and CMYK, when to use one rather than the other; Itten’s circle, explanation of the subdivision between primary, secondary, tertiary and complementary colours)
  • Colour psychology: (what emotions and what the various colours represent; how to use them in the most appropriate way)
  • Image formats: (Raster graphics and vector graphics; in what fields they are used and with what software to create or modify them)
  • Images for Social Media: (Which formats and sizes to use)
  • Overview of the various types of logos
  • Most common errors in graphic composition: (Practical examples of what NOT to do when typesetting a document or a graphic composition)

In the practical part of the course, students learnt the basics of using Adobe Express software (in its free option), an online platform that allows logos, documents and multimedia material to be created easily and effectively.
